Salary: National Minimum Wage / National Living Wage

Hours: Approx. 40 hours per week (Split Shifts: 07:30–13:30 & 17:30–20:00)

About the Role

This is an essential role within a busy and friendly catering team, working 5 days per week (approx. 40 hours total). As a Kitchen Assistant, you will help deliver high-quality meal and beverage services, maintain excellent standards of hygiene and cleanliness, and ensure dining areas are always presentable and welcoming.

The position operates on a split-shift pattern (morning and evening service). Weekend availability is ideal to suit the college's schedule, though this is not a strict deciding factor. It is an ideal opportunity for a school or college leaver looking to start their career, or for anyone with prior kitchen experience looking to settle into a rewarding educational setting.

Accommodation Note: Live-in accommodation is potentially available on-site for the right candidate.Purpose

To provide and maintain a high-quality standard of service for the client and customers, whilst achieving high standards of cleanliness, hygiene, and safety, and working strictly within all company and client policies and procedures.
 

Key Responsibilities

  • Preparation & Display: Prepare all working, service, dining, and bar areas. Carry out pre-service checks prior to daily service to ensure all equipment and products are available throughout. Ensure sales and display areas look attractive, clean, and fully stocked according to unit standards.
  • Food & Beverage Service: Assist in the preparation and merchandising of menu, snack, hospitality, bar, and vending items, taking responsibility for the service of food and beverages at all times. Follow unit procedures to maintain high service standards.
  • Customer Care: Maintain a professional image, delivering the highest standards of customer care. Visually recognise key personnel by name and title and address them accordingly.
  • Relationship Building: Build successful relationships with customers, clients, colleagues, and the management team. Be flexible in assisting across the unit in response to business needs. Deal with and promptly report any customer complaints to your supervisor.
  • Till & Sales: Take cash payments and maintain necessary sales records. Describe products and their contents accurately, using positive selling techniques to maximise sales opportunities.
  • Teamwork: Promote a friendly working environment and work flexibly to support colleagues. Attend daily briefings to keep up to date with menu content.
  • Cleaning & Maintenance: Clean and service equipment (e.g. coffee and vending machines) to the required standard. Clear and clean all service, preparation, and eating areas, utensils, and equipment using the unit rota.
  • Compliance & Safety: Work within HACCP and Health & Safety regulations at all times.
  • Professionalism: Demonstrate a professional, courteous, and friendly attitude towards clients, staff, and colleagues at all times.
  • Functions & Events: Assist with the preparation and production for special functions and evening events, which may occasionally fall outside normal working hours.
  • Site-Specific Duties: Assist in delivering vending services, including cleaning, stock rotation, replenishment, and recording stock to standard. Report any equipment faults to the Manager or Supervisor in charge promptly.
 

What We Are Looking For

  • Availability: Ability to work 5 days per week on a split-shift schedule (weekend availability is ideal, though not essential).
  • Experience: Experience in similar catering or hospitality operations is desirable, as well as proven customer care skills and high levels of numeracy. (School leavers with a strong work ethic are also strongly encouraged to apply!).
  • Key Attributes: Punctual, hard-working, dependable, and proactive.
  • Communication: A friendly and professional manner when interacting with pupils, staff, and colleagues.
  • Flexibility: Comfortable working split shifts and flexible to assist with occasional evening functions.
