The Opportunity
Pineapple Recruitment is proud to collaborate with one of the University of Oxford’s most beautiful and forward-looking constituent colleges. Set within stunning, historic grounds in the heart of the city, our client is home to a vibrant academic community and a dedicated team of professional staff.
The College’s Works Department is now seeking an organised and methodical Fire Safety Manager to join them on a part-time basis. In this vital role, you will take lead responsibility for ensuring the college site, its historic listed buildings, and its modern facilities remain safe, compliant, and fully protected.
The role:
As the Fire Safety Manager, you will be the college's dedicated custodian of fire safety, managing compliance throughout the site in strict accordance with The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
Reporting directly to the Head of Works, you will oversee fire safety contractors, manage electrical and mechanical compliance testing, maintain meticulous documentation, and lead fire safety training and drills across the estate.
Key Responsibilities
Contractor Management: Supervise and coordinate external compliance contractors (fire alarms, extinguishers, smoke detection). Ensure all RAMS and PLI documentation are in place, schedule visits, and manage performance.
Fire Risk Assessments: Review all Fire Risk Assessments annually (or following any site modifications) and manage the college fire logbook.
Routine Testing & Maintenance: Oversee weekly fire control panel and break glass tests, monthly emergency light flick tests, and annual 3-hour discharge tests. Coordinate timely remedial repairs.
Drills & Evacuations: Organise and lead termly fire drills in collaboration with the Lodge team, review alarm activations, and compile tactical fire salvage plans with the local fire service.
Policy & Training: Display clear evacuation procedures across the site, coordinate fire warden training, and deliver engaging fire safety awareness presentations to staff and students.
Budgeting: Compile and manage the departmental fire safety budget in partnership with the Head of Works.
Emergency Response: Remain contactable for emergency situations and attend site if required (with 24-hour escalation support).
About You
To succeed in this role, you will need a keen eye for detail, a trustworthy and discreet nature, and a passion for preserving safety standards across a unique, historic estate.
Qualifications: A NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety, IOSH Health & Safety competency certificate, or a genuine willingness to study for and attain these qualifications.
Experience: Proven experience in management, ideally within an educational setting or historic/listed buildings where modern compliance must blend seamlessly with heritage architecture.
Technical Knowledge: A strong understanding of fire detection systems, panels, and emergency lighting schematics.
Personal Qualities: Excellent communication skills, a highly organised approach to record-keeping, and the ability to work independently.
First Aid: First Aid trained, or willing to undergo training.
What's on offer:
Competitive Pro-Rata Salary: £22,616 per annum.
Work in a Stunning Setting: Daily access to one of Oxford’s most beautiful, historic college estates and private gardens.
Professional Investment: A strong commitment to your personal development, including fully funded training to achieve key health and safety qualifications (NEBOSH/IOSH/First Aid) if not already held.
Supportive Culture: Join a collaborative, inclusive, and highly professional works team within a world-class academic institution.
