Deputy General Manager
You will be the person who turns a full house into a night guests remember and a team that wants to come back. This independent pub business is built on hospitality, inclusivity, and a living wage—award-worthy food and drink that stay genuinely accessible, sourced from local and acclaimed suppliers, in rooms that feel warm rather than staged. As Deputy General Manager, you will run the service and the business behind it so every shift delivers welcome, consistency, and commercial results, and so the pub stays rooted in its community.
Performance Objectives
- Lead daily food, drink, and floor service so speed, standards, and guest satisfaction hold through peak trading.
- Hit agreed sales, labour, and waste targets by writing rotas, controlling cost, and coaching in the moment.
- Recruit, train, and develop an inclusive team so shifts run to standard when you are off the floor.
- Keep the pub guest-ready and audit-ready: food hygiene, allergens, licensing, cash, and safety, with zero avoidable lapses.
- Strengthen ties with local suppliers, regulars, and community partners so the offer feels specific, not generic.
- Stand in for the General Manager with full operational authority, protecting standards and morale through busy periods and change.
- Turn guest feedback and trading numbers into weekly gains in execution, sensible upselling, and repeat visits.
Environment & Resources
You report to the General Manager and lead supervisors and the front-of-house team, working closely with the kitchen on service flow. You will use the till, rota and labour tools, stock and allergen records, and direct supplier relationships. Standards, seasonal menus, and a living-wage commitment are already in place; your job is to make them show up on every shift.
Essential Qualifications
- Proven deputy or senior supervisor experience in a busy pub, bar, or restaurant.
- A clear record of labour, sales, or cost results you personally influenced.
- Working knowledge of UK licensing, food safety, and allergen requirements, with the licence to operate or equivalent.
- Calm authority with guests and inclusive leadership of mixed teams, including recovery when service slips.
- Confidence with rotas, cash, stock control, and a basic profit-and-loss view.
- Availability for evenings, weekends, and peak trading periods.
Why This Role
- Real operational authority, not a title that only covers breaks.
- A living wage and a culture that treats hospitality as a craft.
- Serious food and drink that remain welcoming and accessible.
- Community and charitable partnerships that give the work a purpose beyond the till.
- An independent business where good ideas reach the floor quickly.
